120 Bourke Street, Windsor
3 Beds | 2 Baths | 552 Square metres | 2 car spaces |
Background
In 1984 Bob designed a new accessible retirement home for his parents at 146 Kelvin Street. Since then, Bob has designed many homes with level accesses and accessible facilities.
In 2004 Bob’s late wife Margery, was diagnosed with a neurological like Parkinson’s.
Bob drove with Margery and a wheelchair to many places in New Zealand, including Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands, Northland, and he knows the difficulty of visiting and staying at places, without level accesses and without accessible toilets and wet area showers.
Home and Land Build Features:
• Bob Simpson bought this 551sq m approx. freehold section, at 120 Bourke Street, because the block of land has a long north south dimension and it is near the Windsor shopping area.
• Bob designed this approx. 220sq m home and worked with Gordon McMillian and the team at Vercoe McMillian Architecture, to complete the developed design drawings.
• This design has three welcoming, sheltered entries, two living spaces which receive the sun from the east, north and west, three good-sized bedrooms, (one bedroom could be used for a live in carer), and two accessible bathrooms. The laundry is in one of the bathrooms and there is an additional sink area in the garage.
• There is a turret to provide light and ventilation to the centre of the home.
• The home will be heated by 2.4kw Noirot electric panel heaters, because they are cost effective, they are quiet, and they do not create draughts.
This design has a large double garage with internal access, 7.5m long x 6.5m wide. The garage door is 5.1m wide by 2.5m high. A high van or high vehicle will fit under this garage door. Vehicles can turn on the site, so they do not have to back over the footpath, on to Bourke Street.
• The ceiling height is 2.55m and the family room has a sloping ceiling.
• The home is suitable for people with disabilities or for people who want to have a home where they, and their family and their friends, can enjoy an accessible home.
• The kitchen-family room contains an L-shaped kitchen and on the north, it has a sliding door to a glazed veranda and a spacious private outdoor lawn and garden area.
• This is a low maintenance home with long run corrugated Colorsteel roofing, brick veneer, and vertical cedar weatherboards.
